Reading and Phonics
Reading
Developing a love of reading with your child is one of the best gifts you can give them. At school we encourage this through daily story times, role playing stories, story sacks and weekly visits to the school library to choose new books.
We cannot encourage you enough to read books often with your child, discussing the stories, linking them to their own experiences and thinking about what might happen next. Please find some top tips for reading with your child below. The journey to reading starts a long way before they start to formally learn to read themselves (decode words) with formal phonics teaching. It starts with you sharing a love of books and stories from an early age with your child. We have created our Newton Canons to encourage you to read certain classic books with your child. Of course, reading is not limited to these titles, but they are great place to start. We strongly encourage you to read all of the canon with your child in their respective year group. They will receive five house points when you have written in their book that they have completed the book at home with you.
In the Summer Term, before children start Reception in the September, we will start to introduce them to the RWI phonics scheme where they begin their word decoding journey. Please see the phonics page for more information on this.
Phonics
At Newton on Trent C of E Primary School, we use Read Write Inc. (RWI) as our systematic, synthetic phonics scheme to teach children to decode the English language. Please see the presentation below for more information. However, please o ensure you are practising reading your child's phonics books as they are sent home from school. There will be a two to read each time and these will be routinely changed by the adults in school. Any questions, please do ask Mrs Jones or one of the other staff members.
