Phonics

At Newton we follow the Ruth Miskin scheme Read Write Inc for Phonics. Pre-school children will first be introduced to phonics in the Summer Term before they start Reception in September. These are short sessions around 10 minutes. The Reception and Year 1 children take part in phonics followed by Get Writing for English, building up to one hour a day every morning. If you wish to know more about how this is taught in classrooms or the order in which it is taught then there is a document below that will give you more information. You can also visit the parent information part of the Ruth Miskin website which has lots of information including videos you can watch. Children will be bringing home special books to help them consolidate the set 1,2 and 3 sounds. Please help your child with their learning by practising the sound they have learnt that day, as indicated by the class teacher in their book.

As children move through the scheme, they will be bringing home home school books and the books they have been reading in school. Please support your child by reading at home with them and writing in their school diary. The importance you place on reading at home and the practise you can provide will really aid your child with all of their learning.
